Talking Life: Geoff Banner

By Leah Delaney

Geoff BannerFamily…

I was born in Papua New Guinea where my parents Richard and Kath worked as Missionaries. I have three siblings, Lynette, Tim (my Twin) and Carolyn. Dad is a recently retired schoolteacher and Mum is a long-term volunteer at SIM Australia’s national office.

On Trade…

I’m a Shopfitter/Cabinetmaker and have been in the trade for almost 11 years. I did an apprenticeship at a joinery shop in Sydney. At the end of my 3rd year apprenticeship, I took on the role of production manager and was responsible for all CAD work and purchasing of materials. At the end of my 4th year, I became a foreman.

Joining MMM…

I joined MMM mid 2009. I felt a strong calling to fulfil God’s purposes and a definite conviction that I should use my training to help others. Knowing that the work I do provides facilities for Christian organisations is inspirational. God made me a practical man & MMM is the only truly practical mission I know of
in Australia.

The Work So Far…

I have been involved in construction, repair and maintenance with MMM.

On Mission…

Pre-MMM, I was involved in a work party in Zambia and two work parties in PNG. My work with MMM so far has been local however I intend to head to the Solomon Islands with a work team soon.

Hobbies…

Helping friends and family.

Pet Peeve…

I dislike conflict.

On hard times…

I have been unwell during the last 12 months and I  have questioned God many times. I questioned why he took my friend and not me. I questioned why I felt this way. Through these times, God picked me up and carried me when I didn’t have the strength to walk. I have learnt to look to God and put my trust in him.

Words of Wisdom…

Put your trust in God. Through hard times commit your life to him and remember that he has been ahead and planned the way for us all.
